from the week, vol. 5: thanksgiving edition

1. We've been hit by the plague over and over. James had a stomach bug, Gracie had a cold that turned into a mild case of croup, I had that weird flu that lasted a day but gave me a lingering sore throat for a week, and James was hit with a nasty case of bronchitis. That was all in 6 days. The more I disinfected, the sicker everyone seemed to get.

2. On top of all that, I went to the dentist. I weirdly love my dentist, especially since I was watching Bobby Flay on my own personal tv while getting my teeth cleaned, but this visit didn't end so well when I was told I have 2 cavities. I have to get two fillings on Wednesday at 7:30 in the morning. Early mornings and dentists are two things that should not coexist.

3. My parents came for Thanksgiving. I've been looking forward to this since last Thanksgiving. My mom brings some pies, I cook a bunch of food, and we buy some of it. It's what works for us. I spent all last Wednesday baking and cooking and stored it all in the fridge. We woke up Thanksgiving morning to find that the fridge had died overnight. OF ALL DAYS OF THE YEAR. To make it even better, I discovered it while James was at the pharmacy filling another prescription because his bronchitis was getting progressively worse. It was a rough morning.

4. The best part of renting (the only good part?) is that we have an emergency maintenance phone number. Within the hour, the maintenance man was replacing the broken fan in our fridge with the one he said he just happened to have on him. We got coolers and ice to keep the food from going bad while the fridge cooled off again. We spent the day eating and watching Christmas movies by. All's well that ends well.

5. It's our Black Friday tradition to go to PF Changs for lunch. I have no idea how this got started, but we love it. Last year when my dad was praying for our meal, I opened my eyes to see Gracie slyly stick her chopstick in my dad's hot & sour soup and then lick it. In keeping with tradition, I opened my eyes during the prayer to see Gracie slowly reach over and grab James' bowl of soup and slide it toward her. Homegirl ate the whole entire thing.

6. Friday night my parents were still here, so we ordered our favorite Mexican food, ate it on the couch, and watched The Santa Clause. It was the most perfect evening. I used to wish I spent holidays with huge family gatherings and fancy meals, but now I can't imagine doing it any other way.

7. I am 99% done Christmas shopping. I have to get Gracie a few more stocking stuffers, and that's it.  My plan had been to have everything wrapped so I could send it to Iowa with my parents after Thanksgiving since we'll be there for Christmas, but with the black death over our house, that didn't happen. Regardless, I want to have my Christmas shopping done by Thanksgiving every year from now on. That way I can spend December relaxing in front of the Christmas tree. I even ordered my Christmas cards already! If only that meant I could spend December relaxing, but that's not going to happen this year. Hopefully next December will be more relaxing. We are THISCLOSE to signing up for cable again just so we can watch Hallmark Christmas movies next year.

  1. The Santa Clause is def. a favorite Christmas movie for me! Sorry about the cavities. I don't mind going to the dentist but I'm always a bit nervous until I get the "everything's good" message. I had a bunch of dental work as a kid but thankfully the adult years have been pretty easy on my teeth. Our Christmas cards are hopefully getting in the mail today--mail across the world takes longer--but I've done basically no Christmas shopping.

  2. I have two Christmas presents left to get and then I'm totally done and I am so happy. My goal is usually December 1st. It makes the holidays so much less stressful and I end up spending less when I plan ahead! Matt's going away deer hunting for a few days in the beginning of December and I have big plans to sit by the Christmas tree with some hot chocolate and watch one of those holiday baking shows and wrap my heart out. I can't wait. Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

  3. I'm glad the fridge story ended well. HOW STRESSFUL! Dang. And yay for relaxing with the parents :) I'm so glad you got to spend some time with them this holiday season!
Can we talk about this weird crush I'm developing on Bobby Flay? The more Beat Bobby Flay I watch, the stronger that crush gets. Hahahaha!

  4. Yay for almost being done with Christmas shopping! I'm pretty nearly done with mine too, and it's so nice to have one less thing to stress about.

  5. Oh man, having the fridge die would be a horrible way to start Thanksgiving! I'm glad y'all had a good holiday despite that. Your Black Friday tradition sounds so fun!

  6. BLESS YOU. I'm so sorry. This is terrible.

But Gracie at PF Chang's...my girl knows how to take advantage of a good opportunity.
